Metro West is a major aspiration of the City of Dublin, to deliver sustainable access and growth. The 250m crossing of the Liffey Valley will be one of the project highlights and the new bridge will be the most prominent symbol of this highly important strategic connection, as well as a new benchmark for high quality transport infrastructure. The cable-stay design resolves the key relationships with ground,
valley and skyline - addressing the immediate footprint of the structure, the environment within the valley setting and the place of the bridge within the wider city.
A tall diamond form was developed for the single tower and the bridge deck is designed to be both efficient and simple to construct, with two lines of stay cables set to each to side of the paired rail tracks. To the outside are the two pedestrian and cycle decks, each with wonderful views of the lush green valley through the tall, minimalist glass parapet. The rail deck leads design best practice with an isolated track
bed and a planted turf surround, as increasingly seen throughout Europe, to create a broad green surface and an extension of the surrounding natural habitat.
